What is a podcast?

A podcast is a media file that is distributed by subscription over the internet using syndication feeds, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers. Through podcasting you may directly download or stream of the content of a podcast. A podcast is distinguished from other digital audio formats by its ability to be downloaded automatically, using software capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom. Do I need an iPod to listen to Podcasts?

Not at all. You can listen to podcasts directly from your computer. If you want to take it with you, any MP3 player or iPod will work.

Do I need any special software to listen to podcasts?

No, you can listen to podcasts directly through your web browser.(may require the most recent version of your browser) To subscribe to a podcast -- which allows for automatic downloads of new material -- you will need a music player that supports podcast, such as iTunes 4.9 or greater.
